It was a surprise.
Well, it wasn’t in the case of Ryan Mathews. After all, it was believed he’d miss Sunday’s game since he wasn’t cleared for contact until halfway into last week. But when Antonio Gates was ruled out on Sunday, Chargers fans couldn’t help but be a little shocked.
I mean, we’re talking about one of the toughest guys in the NFL here. A little rib injury didn’t seem like it would faze him, especially since the guy played with a debilitating foot injury parts of the last two years.
Apparently, it did faze him, though, enough for the Chargers to opt to give him the week off.
It was probably the right call. It wasn’t like the team needed him to beat Tennessee, especially since they had their secret weapon in Dante Rosario — who racked up a career high three touchdowns on Sunday.
What’s that?
Here we go again with Gates?
Yeah, yeah, he’s injured again. Before some of you decide that you want to cut or trade him — like you did with Mathews — there is good news to report here.
According to Michael Gehlken of the U-T San Diego, there is hope that the Chargers can get both Antonio Gates and Ryan Mathews back for this upcoming Sunday.
I did enjoy seeing Jackie Battle and Dante Rosario go berserk against the Titans. However, it would be nice to have the gang back together just in time for the Falcons, which will prove to be this team’s first major test of the young season.
